Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new seventh-generation Transporter and Caravelle vans, adding them to their lineup that already includes the fully electric ID. Buzz and the Multivan T7. The latest VW Transporter T7, based on the same underpinnings as the new Ford Transit Custom, offers a versatile range of powertrains, including turbodiesel, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric options.

This new generation comes in various configurations, including LCV (panel van, panel van Plus, and double cab dropside) and passenger versions (Kombi and Caravelle). For those needing extra space, the Transporter T7 also offers high roof and extended wheelbase options to accommodate more cargo or passengers.

Predictably, the VW Transporter and Caravelle share their proportions and several body panels with the Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom. Nevertheless, VW designers have made an effort to distinguish their models by incorporating unique styling elements to set them apart.

The standout feature is the revamped front end, blending design cues from both the Multivan and ID. Buzz. Distinctly VW touches include a flat beltline along the side windows and Amarok-inspired LED taillights with body-colored inserts. Inside, the cabin largely mirrors the Ford’s setup, featuring a standard digital cockpit with a 12-inch instrument cluster and a 13-inch infotainment screen, plus a host of practical storage solutions.

VW e-Caravelle Style

VW Transporter PanAmericana

The pictured blue van represents the Caravelle in the flagship Style trim, designed for nine passengers, while the green-yellow Transporter panel van showcases the rugged PanAmericana variant. The PanAmericana stands out with its painted bumpers, matching fenders and side moldings, and 19-inch Indianapolis alloy wheels. Inside, you’ll find illuminated stainless steel inlays on the side steps, high-gloss black accents, and exclusive seat fabrics adorned with PanAmericana branding.

In terms of specifications, VW claims that the T7 offers “more space, payload, towing capacity, and efficiency” compared to its predecessor. The T6.1 had to be discontinued earlier this year due to not complying with the latest cybersecurity regulations in the European Union.

Plenty of Powertrain Options

Depending on the variant, the new Transporter measures between 5,050 and 5,450 mm (198.8 – 214.6 inches) in length, with wheelbases of either 3,100 mm (122 inches) or 3,500 mm (137.8 inches). It’s longer and wider than its predecessor, resulting in an increased maximum load capacity ranging from 5.8 to 9.0 cubic meters (204.8 to 317.8 cubic feet). The maximum payload varies up to 1.33 tonnes (2,932 pounds), with a towing capacity reaching 2.8 tonnes (6,173 pounds).

The van offers a choice of three turbodiesels, a 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid, and three fully electric powertrain options. The least powerful diesel delivers 108 hp (81 kW / 110 PS), while the EV produces 282 hp (210 kW / 286 PS). Internal combustion engine models come with front-wheel drive, with optional all-wheel drive available for the more powerful diesels. In contrast, the electric versions (e-Transporter and e-Caravelle) are rear-wheel drive, though all-wheel drive options are anticipated in the future.

The new Transporter and Caravelle made their first public appearance at the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hannover. Hollywood actor Jason Statham was tapped as the face of the campaign, cleverly nodding to his role in the “Transporter” film series.

The VW Transporter T7 is already available to order in Germany, starting at €36,780 ($39,654) excluding VAT, or €43,768.20 ($47,188) including VAT for the entry-level diesel-powered panel van. Pricing for the passenger-oriented Caravelle is yet to be announced. Production will take place in Turkey, alongside the Ford Transit/Tourneo Custom.
